Public Calls for Local Hunting on BU Preserve

There are currently 100 deer in the nature preserve, which is about 10 times more than there should be.
BU officials say the deer have already extinguished about a dozen species of wildflowers and prevented the forest from regenerating.
The plan is to bring in sharpshooters to take care of the problem.
But some in attendance tonight feel local people with hunting licenses could do the same job.
You want to kill them off…I pay for a hunting license, he pays for a hunting license. They should let us in there and hunt. You dont have to use guns. You can use bows. That way, youre not endangering anybody, said Art Linz.
Either let hunters in with bows to let them hunt on a yearly basis to keep the herd down, or tranquilize them and transport them to the state woods and turn them loose, said Jim Bisingard.
Officials with the natural reserve say hunting could be in the future plans, but right now, they have safety concerns.
The plan could be put in place during winter break, between December 21 to January 20.
