UAE top in Arab world and in top 30 countries worldwide in terms of legislated protection of IP and copyright
As part of its ongoing quest to bolster intellectual property rights and copyright in the UAE, the Emirates Publishers Association (EPA) took part in two events addressing this important topic recently: a meeting held under the aegis of the International Federation of Reproduction Rights Organisations (IFRRO) regarding the establishment of a centre for Intellectual Property Rights and Copyright Protection in the UAE, and a panel discussion on global intellectual property rights, organised by EPA in collaboration with the Emirates Intellectual Property Association (EIPA) and hosted by the Sharjah International Book Fair.
The IFRRO meeting was attended by EPA President Sheikha Bodour Bint Sultan Al Qasimi, IFRRO CEO Olav Stokkmo, representatives from the British Publishers Association, and Founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors of EIPA, Dr Abdul Quddous Abdul Razak Al Obeidly.
Matters under discussion included IP legislation in the UAE and plans for the future, including the establishment of an intellectual property rights centre in the UAE – the first of its kind in the Arab world. Updates on on the status of the centres development, and on obtaining the necessary licence for the centre were also given. The UAE is serious about its commitments in this regard, and is signatory to the Berne Convention, the WIPO Copyright Treaty, the TRIPS/WTO Treaty, and the Arab Copyright Convention. Already, it has attained the status of top Arab country in terms of its copyright legislation, and is one of the top 30 countries in the world in this area.
