Habitat still looking for funding

With the anniversary celebration for its ReStore now behind it, Habitat for Humanity of Danville remains in fundraising mode for houses No. 49 and 50.

Were up to $7,000 to $8,000, executive director John Graves said of the $50,000 needed for home build No. 50.

But were still trying to raise money for the 49th house first, he said on Monday.

This year marks Habitat for Humanitys 25th year in Danville.

To mark the occasion, the local organization is planning to build its 50th house this year.

Habitat ReStores success in the past year has meant it can totally fund one house build this year Habitats 48th house at Harmon and Townsend streets. Construction of the house is in progress.

Also, the ReStore can partially fund the 49th house, and Habitat continues to look for 50 partners to pay $1,000 each for the 50th house build this year.

The ReStore, on Walnut Street in the old Sears automotive store, is a retail outlet for used furniture, appliances and other household items, building materials and other supplies. Anyone can purchase or donate items. Habitat resells items to raise funds to build more Habitat homes.

Habitat hoped to build at least two additional homes a year with the ReStore funding.

Habitat has several approved families waiting for homes. Graves has said a lot of families dont qualify for conventional financing for homes.

Habitat is affiliated with Habitat for Homes International, an international, ecumenical Christian, non-governmental organization devoted to partnering with low-income families to build simple, decent and affordable houses.

Participating families pay for their houses with an interest-free mortgage from Habitat. Payments from existing loans are used to construct more houses.

Monthly mortgage costs are about $350, in addition to utility costs. Income requirements for families vary, based on debt load.

Qualifying families also must have lived in Vermilion County for 18 months; be willing to put in 250 hours of sweat equity; and pay $1,000 down at move in.
