She said that Angel and Gaby, the next cat to join the family, showed their love with hugs around her neck, nuzzles of her face and, of course, the comforting quality of purring. Through the loss of a job, a life-threatening illness and other events, good and bad, her cats — she now has three, Lily, Jasmine and Daisy — have supported her.
Their unconditional love — the look of adoration they bequeath me when cuddled in my arms — always brings a smile to my face, she said.
Of the nine pets in the Milford household of Mike and Beth Butts, a cat named Penny has a special hold on them. Penny was found in December 2009, frozen to a grate in an apartment parking lot.
Whenever we sit down, she rubs us and wants to be with us, really be a part of your life, Beth Butts said. Its amazing that she came up from being a lump of fur who did nothing.
As volunteers with PAWS for People — a pet-assisted visitation serviced based in Newark — Beverly Parnell of Bear has seen Missy, her standard poodle, spread plenty of love. On one hospital visit, she believes that the touch of the dogs head was enough to push a patient back into consciousness, following his grogginess from anesthesia. Parnell and Missy continued to visit him in rehab.
She was able to sense when he wasnt having a good day by jumping up onto his bed and snuggling with him, Parnell said. Invariably this would soothe his agitation.
Odessa resident Karen Ann Sheats says Decoy, a chocolate Lab, is a source of ongoing joy for her family.
No matter how bad your days been, hes there with his love, she said, describing how he arrives at the door bouncing up and down, so excited to see her and her sons, Tre and JaiVon, that he doesnt even want to go out for a bathroom break. Shell force him, though, and hell go quickly so he can return to be with the family.
Of course, for the other family pets — Niobe, a cat, and Crocket, a 15-year-old dog — the welcomes are far less dramatic. Niobe and Crocket are too laid back to get excited when anyone reaches the door.
