Arts Notes: Cummer celebrating ‘The Year of the Sheep’

Posted By on January 26, 2012

The Year of the Sheep, an exhibit of paintings Richard Chamberlain began as therapy in the late 1980s, will open Tuesday at the Cummer Museum of Art amp; Gardens.

The work deals with Chamberlains experiences during a tour of duty with the Marines in Vietnam. On the Chinese calendar, 1967, which Chamberlain spent in Southeast Asia, was the Year of the Sheep.

The series consists of black-and-white images that are reminiscent of abstracted landscapes. They are markedly different from Chamberlains other paintings, which are far more traditional.

The Year of the Sheep will continue at the Cummer, 829 Riverside Ave., through July 8. The Cummer is open daily except Monday. Admission...

Wall St.’s Odd Couple and Their Quest to Unlock Riches

Posted By on January 25, 2012

Private equity and public pensions are one of Wall Street’s most peculiar love affairs. Recently, the two have tried to become even closer. But don’t get mushy — this relationship is about money, not romance.

Public pensions pay billions in fees to private equity. The question is whether it is worth it.

Private equity’s first date with public pensions was in 1981, when the Oregon Investment Council, the manager of Oregon’s pension fund, invested along with Kohlberg Kravis Roberts Company to buy the retailer Fred Meyer.

Since then, the two have been inseparable, and pension funds have at times made up more than 50 percent of private equity’s...

Id met her several times before, so often in fact that I would interrupt the person who was giving us the courtesy of getting acquainted with each other and say, Ive met her before; so-and-so was our mutual friend, etc. But still, every time we were introduced, shed nod out of habit, I guess, say something forgettable and that was my cue to turn my interest to someone or something else. If she could not be bothered, why should I?

You meet a lot of these characters in cocktail parties where the drinks and the din render you unrecognizable...

Libra Sept 23 – Oct 22

The soul’s power to express beauty in all of its forms is your genius. The urge of your soul is to beautify the world and yourself. To explore the spiritual dimension of love, avoid being self-centred, and try to understand the spiritual nature of those in whom you are interested. From January to May you will experience a period of growing trust, respect and interdependence with your friends and social relations. It is also a time during which you can easily draw on endurance and courage to take risks in pursuit of the truth. Try not to be overwhelmed by the beauty of love and language in your love affairs. Understand that different types...

4 Companies That Stand To Profit Off Growth In Canada’s Oil Sands – Part 2

Posted By on January 20, 2012

In part one of this two article series, I made the case for Canadas oil sands region as a center of growth in the energy industry. I also presented Suncor Energy (SU) and Statoil (STO), two large integrated energy companies that are likely to be profiting off of this growth.

In Part II of this article, I will present Provident Energy (PVX) and Penn West Exploration (PWE) as two further companies that could derive profit growth from the development of the Canadian oil sands. These two companies were formerly Canadian Royalty Trusts but both have since converted to corporations.
